Berkley DPS Bids Fond Farewell to K-9 Bear and Officer Anderson

July 29, 2025

After years of loyal and dedicated service, the Berkley Department of Public Safety announces the retirement of K-9 Bear and the departure of his handler, Officer Anderson, to pursue new opportunities with another agency.

Bear joined the department in 2018 and quickly became more than just a police K-9, serving as a familiar face at community events, school demonstrations, and neighborhood patrols. His presence contributed significantly to public safety through his work in narcotics detection, suspect tracking, and community engagement, bringing strength to the department’s operations and joy to our community.

Officer Anderson has served the City of Berkley for 11 years, demonstrating exemplary commitment and professionalism. He was instrumental in Bear’s success and, in addition to playing a key role in the growth of the department’s K-9 program, has been recognized with awards from Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his enforcement of impaired driving, as well as four Life Saving Awards, two Distinguished Service Awards, and a Unit Citation.

We wish Officer Anderson the best of luck as he moves on to continue his career in law enforcement, and hope that Bear enjoys a well-deserved retirement as a beloved family pet in the care of Officer Anderson! The Berkley Department of Public Safety looks forward to introducing a new K-9 officer when the time is right.
